Maserati GT Coupé

390 Hp, 285 kph top speed and 0-100 kph in just 4.9 seconds. Incredible performance figures – but no more than you’d expect from an exclusive car like the Maserati GT. The combination of Formula 1 technology with outstanding comfort, the Modenese Coupé seats 4 passengers with ease, and its luggage compartment is large enough for 2 golf bags. Style Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign, the Maserati Coupé is full of innovative features from the new hood with its characteristic muscular styling to mark the new engine beneath it, to the rear section’s completely redesigned taillight assembly featuring clear lens technology. The interior is even more spacious, with an additional 25 mm height and 15 length compared with the ample interior of the previous model, and a new range of colour schemes that combines 16 bodywork colours, 10 leather colours and 5 carpet colours. As with all Maseratis, the customer is completely free to use the services of the Officine Alfieri Maserati programme with its vast range of personalisation options. The engine The power plant is the outcome of a specific design project: a 90° V8 4244 cc unit, compact, lightweight (at merely 184 kg), with the structure of the most evolved competition engines, the flagship of the new generation of Maserati engines, combining performance, torque, efficiency and emissions to current and future standards. The block and cylinder heads are in aluminium/silica alloy; the crankshaft has 5 bearings, with timing system featuring double chain-driven overhead camshaft per cylinder array and four valves per cylinder. The intake camshafts are equipped with a continuous high-pressure timing variator, with total actuation delay lower than 0.15 s. The lubrication is of the dry sump type with oil and water pumps in a single unit. The ignition and injection systems are integrated Bosch ME7.3.2 with OBD II (On Board Detection and Diagnostic System), so as to enable detection of running malfunctions and ensure compliance with established emissions reduction legislation. The accelerator is of the electronic “drive by wire” type, while the ECU communicates with the other system components over a CAN (Controlled Area Network) to optimise engine management. The performance sets a benchmark: maximum power of 390 Hp (287 kW) at 7000 rpm, with maximum torque 46 kgm (451 Nm) at 4500 rpm. Transaxle transmission layout In the Transaxle configuration, the gearbox (longitudinal, a new design with mechanical transmission and 6 gears plus reverse) is located at the rear in a single unit with the self-locking limited slip differential to obtain the best weight distribution between the two axles and optimise the car’s behaviour in terms of stability and equilibrium, with maximum traction and hence acceleration. The Transaxle layout rigidly mounts the engine to the gearbox via a tubular member containing the drive shaft. The clutch is of the double-plate dry type with flexible torsion couplings and co-axial hydraulic control to exploit the high torque delivery to the utmost. Cambiocorsa The Maserati Coupé is available both with manual 6-speed gearshift and with computerised 6-speed servo-controlled gearshift. The latter solution, called the Cambiocorsa, enables the driver to opt for manual shifting in a strong sports style (two sports settings are available) or Full Automatic. In both cases clutch disengagement/engagement are automatically controlled by the ECU electronics. The Cambiocorsa is actuated with paddles mounted behind the steering wheel while the four available functional settings – normal, sports, fully automatic, low grip – are selected from a button panel. Active suspension and safety The dynamic superiority of the new Maserati Coupé is not only the outcome of the quality of the engine, but also of the intelligent driving components and the opportunities they give to the driver. The suspension assures optimum geometry and minimise the unsuspended masses with forged aluminium hub holders and arms. They are complete with front and rear antiroll bars and antidive and antisquat controls. The Skyhook system is also available as optional equipment for automatic control of suspension damping. The system automatically calibrates the shock absorbers in real time to the driving conditions via 6 acceleration sensors with overall system response 10 times faster than conventional systems of this type. Finally, the Maserati Coupé is equipped with automatic traction control (anti-slide ASR), which can also be cut out, integrated with the Cambiocorsa/engine control unit to further reinforce the effect of the Cambiocorsa settings. The hydraulic power steering reduces the “servo” feeling as speed increases. Passive safety and brakes The Maserati Coupé is equipped with an excellent, highly effective sports braking circuit, manufactured in a co-design agreement with Brembo and composed of large, self-ventilating brake disks and light alloy callipers with four pistons each. The brake booster is two-stage and the brake pad material is Ferodo HP 1000. The ABS system is the Bosch 5.3 that reflects the fact that the pedal assembly is in aluminium. More generally, safety is ensured by the steel self-bearing frame, further reinforced by a tubular cage that exceeds the most stringent EEC/USA passive collision safety standards, and by the main passive safety equipment (side and front air-bags, seat belt pretensioners, inertial fuel cut-out). Interior comfort and equipment The car is designed to exemplify the granturismo concept with the perfect combination of performance and quality of passenger and driver experience, and this is reflected by the large size interior, capable of seating four adults, by the leather upholstery and finishing, the style of the detailing and the analogue instrumentation located conveniently in front of the driver. Electronics is widely used in the car but concentrates on safety equipment without thereby reducing the pleasure and efficiency of driver controls. Among the driver assistance equipment we must mention the Maserati Info Centre which integrates the hi-fi with CD player, trip computer and A/C control, and which can be supplemented with GPS navigation and telephone if so desired. Numerous further options are available in the standard equipment or as optional accessories. Detailing and personalisation There are 16 bodywork colours, 10 leather colours and 5 carpet colours. These can be combined in almost an infinite number of ways to provide a harmonious look and feel to the Coupé’s interior. The personalisation options, provided by the Officine Alfieri Maserati programme, run from interior finishing and upholstery, high-performance hi-fi, colour scheme options like brake calliper colours or custom bodywork paint colours. If so desired, the car can be personalised with the owner’s name or a dedication on the doorsills.
